Funding Opportunity through ISRN

Two Improvement Science Research Network (ISRN) Studies are open to a limited number of collaborating hospital-based Site PIs. The conduct of these studies is supported by the ISRN Coordinating Center, including protocol guidance, IRB assistance, data analysis, and site reporting.

The studies are:

STAR-2 + Study on Frontline Nurse Engagement in Quality Improvement- Download application>>

This study is an expansion of the first ISRN Network Study, Small Troubles, Adaptive Responses (STAR-2): Frontline Nurse Engagement in Quality Improvement. In this study, Frontline nursing staff will use specially-designed pocket cards to detect small problems (also known as operational failures) that prompt work inefficiencies and suboptimal care quality. Impact of Cognitive Load on Medication Errors- Download application >>

In this second wave, ten additional hospitals will have the opportunity to partner with the ISRN on a research collaborative for healthcare improvement. The aim of the study is to describe cognitive load, interruptions, and distractions experienced by registered nurses during medication administration and explore how these impact procedural failures and medication errors. Improvement Science Research Network Offers Tips on Publishing Quality Improvement Projects

As the Improvement Science Research Network's (ISRN) 2013 Summer Institutes on Quality Improvement* are rapidly approaching, the ISRN is offering tips about publishing quality improvement projects and getting involved with their events.

Share Improvement Projects at the Summer Institutes on Quality Improvement

The Summer Institutes on Quality Improvement is accepting abstracts until March 4, 2013. Clinicians, educators, researchers, nurses, physicians, pharmacists, managers, students, and all health professionals are invited to submit an abstract.

The Summer Institutes on Evidence-Based Quality Improvement are held at the Grand Hyatt Riverwalk Hotel in San Antonio, TX and consists of:

·         Improvement Science Summit – July 9-10

·         Specialty Pre Conferences – July 10

o   Educators' EBP Workshop®

o   TeamSTEPPS® Fundamentals Workshop   

o   Essential Elements: An Introduction to Evidence-Based Practice 

·         Summer Institute on Evidence-Based Practice – July 11-13

National and international experts in evidence-based practice (EBP) will share information related to improving healthcare and patient safety through scientifically proven best practices. Based on the success at last year’s conference, the Summer Institutes on Quality Improvement will provide the opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to attend a special student program in conjunction with the conference. 

“Reaching out to students is the next step in preparing our workforce; by educating students upstream on the principles of evidence-based quality improvement, we assure a future of excellent healthcare,” said ACE Director (and INQRI grantee) Kathleen R. Stevens, RN, EdD, ANEF, FAAN, professor in the School of Nursing’s Department of Health Restoration and Care Systems Management. “They are our future healthcare providers and providing them with the tools to incorporate research evidence into clinical care is critical in improving patient care and safety on a continuing basis.”

Improve Healthcare: 5 Helpful Tips from Systems Engineering

The recent report, “Industrial and Systems Engineering and Health Care: Critical Areas of Research” (AHRQ, 2011) outlines how systems thinking can play an essential role in improving the safety and efficiency of care. Given the importance of this topic, the Improvement Science Research Network (ISRN) is hosting a web seminar which will look at improving healthcare delivery through applying systems engineering principles.

Summer Institute on Evidence-Based Quality Improvement

Presented by the Academic Center for Evidence-Based Practice (ACE), the Improvement Science Research Network (ISRN) and the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, the Summer Institute on Evidence-Based Quality Improvement allows participants to apply evidence and build science to improve care and patient outcomes. Experience a full immersion in the latest advances in health care improvement. The Call for Abstracts is open until March 12, 2012 and the conference will take place from July 17-21, 2012 in San Antonio, TX.

INQRI Grantee, Kathleen Stevens, Slated To Be Inducted Into the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame

We are pleased to share with all of you the recent announcement that fourteen nurse researchers, including INQRI grantee, Kathleen R. Stevens, EdD, MS, RN, ANEF, FAAN, will be inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI)'s Hall of Fame in August of this year. This prestigious list of researchers have achieved significant and sustained national and/or international recognition for their work, and whose research has impacted the profession and the people it serves. For any of you interested in attending, the 23rd International Nursing Research Congress will be taking place in Brisbane, Australia from July 30th to August 3rd.

The field of Team Science provides a wealth of information about creating and maintaining successful teams that the ISRN will apply to collaborative research studies.

New Web Event on Improvement Science - Save the Date - Oct 26

The Improvement Science Research Network (led by INQRI grantee Kathleen Stevens) is sponsoring their second web event in a series on improvement science.  Save the date - "Breaking New Ground: Forming Research Collaboratives to Conduct Improvement Studies" will be held October 26 at 2pm ET.

This web event will introduce two upcoming network studies: Frontline Engagement in Quality Improvement and Preventing Medication Errors, which embody several of the most critical topics in improvement science. The web event will present each study’s purpose, research design, research questions, and inclusion/exclusion criteria, along with information regarding how interested individuals can participate in this pioneering research.
