Two Improvement Science Research Network (ISRN) Studies are open to a limited number of collaborating hospital-based Site PIs. The conduct of these studies is supported by the ISRN Coordinating Center, including protocol guidance, IRB assistance, data analysis, and site reporting.

This study is an expansion of the first ISRN Network Study, Small Troubles, Adaptive Responses (STAR-2): Frontline Nurse Engagement in Quality Improvement. In this study, Frontline nursing staff will use specially-designed pocket cards to detect small problems (also known as operational failures) that prompt work inefficiencies and suboptimal care quality. Impact of Cognitive Load on Medication Errors- Download application >>

In this second wave, ten additional hospitals will have the opportunity to partner with the ISRN on a research collaborative for healthcare improvement. The aim of the study is to describe cognitive load, interruptions, and distractions experienced by registered nurses during medication administration and explore how these impact procedural failures and medication errors. Funding Opportunity: NIH Pioneer Awards

NIH welcomes applications for 2014 NIH Pioneer Awards for innovative approaches to major challenges in biomedical or behavioral research.

Knight Foundation Offering $2M+ for Ideas Using Data to Improve Health

Journalism and media organization the Knight Foundation is providing more than $2 million in awards to individuals, companies, and non-profit organizations for innovative new ideas that harness data to improve the health of communities.

Each year, the Knight Foundation holds an annual news challenge.  For this year's focus on health data, they will be partnering with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the California HealthCare Foundation, the Clinton Foundation and the Health Data Consortium.  These groups helped develop the theme for the challenge and will take part in promoting it and reviewing submissions.

The challenge kicks off August 19 with an “inspiration phase” in which people and groups share the opportunities and challenges they are facing which could be addressed with data and public information.  Those ideas will guide the review of submissions, which will be accepted from September 3 through September 17.

Deadline Approaching for Funding Opportunity

The April 17, 2013 (3:00 p.m. ET) deadline for the RWJF's Pioneer Portfolio Call for Proposals for the research initiative Applying Behavioral Economics to Perplexing Health and Health Care Challenges is quickly approaching.

It is expected that approximately five awards of up to $200,000 each under this call for proposals will be made. Projects will last for up to two years each. Please find the key dates below:

April 17, 2013 (3:00 p.m. ET)—Deadline for receipt of 1,500-character brief proposal (description of the idea or experiment) and 1,000-character partnership plan.

May 29, 2013—Applicants notified as to whether they have been invited to submit a full proposal.

July 17, 2013 (3:00 p.m. ET)—Deadline for receipt of full proposals.

Mid-September 2013—Notification of awards.

Grant Opportunity: Applying Behavioral Economics to Perplexing Problems in Health and Healthcare

Applying Behavioral Economics to Perplexing Problems in Health and Healthcare is a partnership with The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to fund approximately five awards of up to $200,000 for projects will last up to two years each. Through this funding opportunity, RWJF and Donaghue are particularly interested in research proposals that test innovative solutions to the challenge of reducing the use of low-value services in health care and for which academic teams collaborate with an outside organization, corporation, or partner that has a population or infrastructure that can be used to test pioneering and promising behavioral economic approaches. This funding is intended to support initiatives that have real potential of being used by these organizations if they prove to be effective.

Call For Proposals: Applying Behavioral Economics to Perplexing Health and Health Care Challenges

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Pioneer Portfolio announced their Call for Proposals for the research initiative: Applying Behavioral Economics to Perplexing Health and Health Care Challenges.

This solicitation is currently seeking innovative proposals that apply the principles and frameworks of behavioral economics to persistent and perplexing health and health care problems. The hope is to discover new interventions and insight that have potential to dramatically improve the way health care is delivered and health is promoted and preserved.

The solicitation is particularly interested in supporting experiments that test innovative solutions to the challenge of reducing the use of low-value services in health care. This problem is particularly important given the rising costs and unaffordability of health care in the United States, but has been difficult to impact in part due to perverse incentives in a fee-for-service environment.

Funding Opportunity: American Nurses Foundation Nursing Research Grants Program

Each year, through its Nursing Research Grants program, the American Nurses Foundation (ANF) provides funds to beginner and experienced nurse researchers to conduct studies that contribute toward the advancement of nursing science and the enhancement of patient care. Some of the specific grants have research area requirements – such as hospice. Some require or give preference to membership in a specific nursing association. In addition, ANF encourages applicants to draw upon the American Nursing Association's (ANA’s) research priorities.  Applicants choosing to utilize ANA’s National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) database will be eligible for up to an additional $3,000 to offset database management costs. (Use of NDNQI data requires a separate application to the NDNQI program which must be completed and approved prior to the May 1, 2013 NRG application date.)

The Public Health Associate Program (PHAP) is a two-year training program run by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that provides opportunities for promising future public health professionals to gain broad experience in the day-to-day operation of public health programs. Upcoming Funding from AHRQ

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) intends to publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to broadly solicit applications for research centers to participate in the “Developing Evidence to Inform Decisions about Effectiveness” (DEcIDE) Network, a component of AHRQ's Effective Health Care Program (see http://effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov/). AHRQ plans to continue the collaborative research network that it established in 2005 with a specific focus on comparative effectiveness and patient-centered outcomes research (CER/PCOR) and methodologies that are designed to support evidence-base decision-making in patient communities served by (1) Medicare; or (2) State Medicaid and/or Children’s Health Insurance (CHIP) programs. Overall FOA objectives are to conduct original research and appropriately disseminate the results to stakeholders.

The primary purposes of each DEcIDE Center will be to:

1. Conduct a well-controlled, protocol-directed investigation on a specific CER/PCOR problem that stakeholders have identified or endorsed as critically important to informing decisions about the outcomes or effectiveness of healthcare interventions for Medicare, State Medicaid, or CHIP patients; and
2. Analyze decision processes and study practical approaches for improving patient outcomes through the effective dissemination of the DEcIDE Center’s primary research findings to Medicare, State Medicaid, or CHIP stakeholders.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. The Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is expected to be published in late winter 2013 with an expected receipt date in spring 2013.

Funding Opportunity: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars 2013 Call for Applications

The goal of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars program is to develop the next generation of national leaders in academic nursing through career development awards for outstanding junior nursing faculty. Candidates must:

• Be a registered nurse with a research doctorate in nursing or a related discipline. 
• Be a junior faculty member in an accredited school of nursing with an academic position that could lead to tenure. Junior faculty are usually at the instructor or assistant professor level. 
• After completing the doctorate, be in an academic position that could lead to tenure for at least two years and no more than five years at the start of the program. 
• Identify at least one senior leader in the school of nursing to serve as a primary (nursing) mentor for academic career planning and to provide access to organizations, programs and colleagues helpful to the candidate’s work as a scholar. 
• Identify at least one senior researcher in the university with similar or complementary research interests to serve as a research mentor. Scholars are encouraged to select the research mentor from a discipline outside of nursing. 
• Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident at the time of application and must not be receiving support from other research fellowships/traineeships at the time they begin the program. Candidates who are permanent residents and not green card holders should contact Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing before applying to determine whether they can satisfy the program’s eligibility and documentation requirements.

Funding Opportunity on Patient-Centered Outcomes Research

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is seeking applications for the new Patient-Centered Outcomes Research (PCOR) Pathway to Independence Award program. The primary purpose of this program is to increase and maintain a strong cohort of new and talented AHRQ-supported independent investigators trained in comparative effectiveness methods to conduct patient care outcomes research. The program is designed to facilitate a timely transition from a junior non-tenure track faculty or a postdoctoral research position (or their equivalents) to a stable independent research career. It targets investigators early in their careers to support their development in new sophisticated methodological comparative effectiveness research skills, interdisciplinary perspectives, and capabilities in PCOR.

New PCORI Funding Opportunities

Assessment of Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options 

Purpose: In this PCORI Funding Announcement (PFA), we seek to fund projects that address critical decisions that face patients, their caregivers, and clinicians every day and with too little information. These decisions must be consequential, be occurring now without key evidence about the comparative effectiveness of two or more options, and patients/caregivers must benefit from new knowledge in ways that are clear and important. The premise of this research is that new knowledge will support critical choices by patients, caregivers, and their clinicians, not that it will deliver a verdict that will lead us to dictate a choice. This knowledge will provide insight about the comparative benefits and harms of the options and provide information about outcomes that are experienced by patients and important to patients.

Funds Available: We anticipate that approximately 54 contracts totaling up to $48 million in total costs may be funded under this PFA in this initial funding cycle, assuming receipt of a sufficient number of high quality applications. PCORI anticipates additional funding cycles related to this announcement. However, funds available may vary, and PCORI reserves the right to modify or terminate this announcement at any time.

Budget and Project Periods: Direct project costs are limited to a maximum of $500,000 per year.

Improving Healthcare Systems 

Synopsis: We are interested in the following broad topical areas:

• Research that compares alternative system-level approaches to supporting and improving patient access to care; receipt of appropriate evidence-based care; the quality, timeliness, and safety of the patient care experience; decision-making based on patients’ personal values; and self-care. Research that compares alternative approaches to models of care delivery or coordination of care across healthcare services or settings, including care for patients with complex, chronic, and/or multiple conditions, are of interest. The emphasis is on comparing approaches for their effect on patients and, when relevant, their caregivers, in ways that they experience and think are important. 
• Research that compares alternative system-level approaches that aim to improve the efficiency of health care delivery to patient populations. These may include efforts to reduce the use of ineffective or wasteful care, to reduce redundant and duplicative care, to shorten waiting times, or enhance the timeliness and quality of communications during referrals and transitions in care. 

Funds Available: We anticipate that approximately 27 contracts totaling up to $24 million in total costs may be funded under this PFA in this funding cycle, assuming receipt of a sufficient number of high quality applications. PCORI anticipates additional funding cycles related to this announcement. However, funds available may vary, and PCORI reserves the right to modify or terminate this announcement at any time.

Funding Opportunity from AACN

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) has announced a funding opportunity for researchers and clinicians. The AACN plans to award almost $200,000 in grant funds, including three Impact Research Grants ($50,000 each).

Prioritized topics include projects that will translate findings about system level and organizational gaps in knowledge for use by bedside clinicians.
