"All Roads Lead to Florence Nightingale"

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s (RWJF’s) senior adviser for nursing, Susan B. Hassmiller, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N., is spending her summer vacation in Europe, pursuing a dream to learn first-hand about the life and work of the legendary Florence Nightingale. In a series of blog posts detailing her special “study tour” to mark the 100th anniversary of Nightingale’s death, Hassmiller reports on her trip and what it means to her work today.

“I am in awe of one of the most remarkable human beings who ever lived,” Hassmiller says in her first post. “I am currently director of the RWJF Initiative on the Future of Nursing at the Institute of Medicine… I know that to look into the future, you must first delve into and learn from the past. And with that perspective, all roads lead to Florence Nightingale...”
