Nearly half of all nurses say they plan to make a career change over the next three years. That could exacerbate the nursing shortage, according to the results of a recent survey of registered nurses.

Lea Ann Dudinyak, recruitment and employment analyst for the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance, said she expects more job openings in July when two-year sign-on bonus commitments for nurses there expire.
Trend Shows Younger Nursing Workforce
One of the favorable trends shaping the nursing workforce is the growing number of younger nurses entering the workforce. Since 2003, there has been a steady increase in nurses ages 23 to 25 entering the workforce with significant growth noted in 2008.
